What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of optimizing your content and technical setup so that AI systems—ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Claude, and others—are more likely to cite you when they answer user questions. The outcome you care about isn’t ranking in a list of links; it’s being named as a source inside the answer.
When someone asks “What’s the best CRM for small teams?” or “How does two-factor authentication work?”, the model synthesizes an answer and often attaches sources. GEO is about making your site one of those sources: clearly written, well-structured, and technically easy for crawlers and models to use.
Why GEO Isn’t Just “SEO for AI”
Traditional SEO optimizes for ranking in the classic search results page. GEO optimizes for being selected as a reference. That changes what you do: you need direct answers, clear entity signals (who you are, what you offer), and structure that models can parse—schema, FAQs, and crawlability (e.g. llms.txt). Pages that rank well in Google can still be skipped by AI if they’re vague, poorly structured, or hard to attribute.
What Actually Moves the Needle
1. Entity clarity. Models need to know who you are. Organization schema on your homepage, a clear About page, and consistent naming across the site help. Without that, even good content may not get attributed to your brand.
2. Answer-shaped content. AI answers are built from snippets that directly address the question. Pages that lead with a clear answer (e.g. a definition, a recommendation, or a step-by-step) get cited more often than long intros or buried conclusions. Put the answer in the first paragraph and under a clear H2.
3. FAQPage schema and real FAQs. Models love Q&A pairs. A dedicated FAQ section with FAQPage schema—and actual questions people ask—increases the chance your content is used for “What is…?” or “How do I…?” queries. Each FAQ should be a full sentence question and a concise answer.
4. Trust and freshness. Stale or thin content is discounted. Update key pages when things change, cite reputable sources where relevant, and fix broken or misleading schema. E-E-A-T (experience, expertise, authoritativeness, trustworthiness) matters for both Google and AI.
How This Shows Up in the Wild
Google’s AI Overviews and Search Generative Experience (SGE) pull from the index and surface a short summary plus source links. The same logic applies in ChatGPT or Perplexity: the model chooses which pages to reference. GEO improves your odds by making your content easy to find, parse, and attribute. Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between GEO and SEO?
- SEO optimizes for ranking in search engine results (the list of links). GEO optimizes for being cited as a source inside AI-generated answers. Both can use similar content and schema, but the success metric differs: rankings and clicks vs. citation frequency and attribution.
- Do I need to choose between SEO and GEO?
- No. A solid SEO foundation (good content, schema, technical health) helps both. Add GEO by ensuring direct answers, entity clarity (Organization schema), and crawlability (e.g. llms.txt). Measure both rankings and citations to see where to invest.
- Which schema types matter most for GEO?
- Organization on the homepage (so models know who you are), FAQPage where you have real Q&A (so models can cite answers), and Article or Product where relevant. Keep schema accurate and avoid duplicate or stale data.
- How long until I see results from GEO?
- AI systems update over time. After fixing entity clarity, FAQs, and schema, some sites see citation changes in weeks; others take longer. Consistency and quality matter more than quick hacks. Track with an AI visibility checker and, if possible, citation tracking over time.
